Consuming five servings of fruits and vegetables each day may help lower lung cancer risk, especially if you eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, suggests a new study.


The World Health Organization estimates lung cancer causes 1.3 million deaths worldwide each year. Globally, cancer-related deaths total 7.4 million per year.

Published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, researchers found individuals eating a mix of fruits and vegetables were 23% less likely to develop lung cancer. And the more variety of fruits and vegetables consumed, cancer risk drops an additional 4% with each serving.

The scientists state a significant link between fruit and vegetable consumption and lung cancer was only found among smokers, with every two additional servings of fruits and vegetables smokers reduced lung cancer risk by another 3%.

The study, part of The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC), involved people from numerous countries, such as Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, and Greece.

Despite the benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables, smoking remains the major cause of lung cancer worldwide. In the United States, smoking accounted for 87% of lung cancer cases; 90% for men and 85% for women.

Experts are saying the obesity rate in the United States will eventually “top out” at 42%, up 8% from a 2007 prediction of 34%.


Common risks of obesity include type-2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Writing in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Computational Biology, researchers expect the number of obese people in the United States to climb to 42% over the next 40 years.

In the study, a mathematical model was applied to four decades of data from the Framingham study; a long term study analyzing the health and habits of a town in Massachusetts.

The researchers say the friends you keep may explain the continued increase in obesity; an American has an additional 0.5% chance of becoming obese with each obese social contact, i.e. friend, they make per year.

Obesity and the desire to lose weight have created a huge weight-loss market in the United States. In 2003, a report claimed Americans spend between $40 and $100 billion on diet products every year.

According to a World Health Organization estimate, in 2007, 400 million adults were obese worldwide.

Rich people in developing countries are bearing the heaviest brunt of the obesity epidemic, suggests a new study.


In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 1.6 billion adults, ages 15 and older, were overweight and at least 400 million adults were obese.

Writing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Harvard researchers found developing nations’ wealthy citizens were more likely to be obese than poor people, which is in stark contrast to U.S. trends, where lower income individuals tend to be fatter.

The WHO projects that by 2015, approximately 2.3 billion adults will be overweight and over 700 million adults will be obese.

For the study, researchers identified trends in the weights of more than half a million women across 54 developing countries between 1994 and 2008 and found people ranking in the top 25% of the population based on wealth had more than double the risk of being overweight, compared to the bottom 25%.

Researchers speculate that food is cheaper and easier for wealthy populations to afford and more upscale neighborhoods also have more restaurants.

But despite the obesity issues, the scientists found a significant portion of the population still suffered from being underweight.

Women who eat foods high in trans-fat may double the risk for their infants to be overweight, claims a new study.


Trans-fat is formed in partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and is used in processed foods, such as snack cakes and potato chips, in order to extend shelf-life.

Dangers of trans-fat include increased risk of heart disease, type-2 diabetes, obesity, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

For the study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers found breastfeeding mothers consuming 4.5 grams of trans-fat per day are more than twice as likely to have children with high body fat.

Mothers eating 4.5 grams of trans-fat each day were five times more likely to have a body fat percentage higher than 30%. And their infants had more than two times the risk of having over 24% body fat.

The scientists say the findings indicate that the detrimental health effects of trans-fat may be passed from mother to child.

Due to health risks, trans-fat has faced increased scrutiny in recent years. In 2008, California became the first U.S. state to ban trans-fat; prohibiting restaurants from using shortening, oil, or margarine containing artificial trans-fats for cooking.

Small amounts of trans-fatty acids are naturally found in foods such as meat and dairy, but the majority of trans-fats come from partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

One day of binge eating candy can sabotage your weight loss plan and cause you to gain 1-2 pounds. Here are a few tips to help you to avoid gaining weight around the Halloween Season.

Tip #1: Eat a balanced meal before going trick-or-treating!

Eating a balanced meal and feeding your kids a balanced meal is a great way to curb the sugar/ dessert cravings. Try to fill up on lean protein, veggies, and fiber before your first piece of candy.

Tip #2: Workout before going out!

If you workout or exercise before trick-or-treating, your body will be more sensitive to insulin. All this means is that your blood sugar will be lower and your hormones won't fluctuate as dramatically after you eat candy or desserts.

Your body will digest sugar a little better if you workout before going out.

Tip #3: Eat a piece of fruit before you eat a piece of candy.

Before sitting down to a big bag of candy, eat a piece of fruit and drink 8 ounces of water. Eating fruit and drinking water has a significant role on satiety (the feeling of fullness). You'll likely eat much less candy if you start with fruit and water.

Tip #4: Give away the excess.

After Halloween, it's time to purge your kitchen and cabinets of the remaining temptations. Bring the extra candy to work or give it to someone else who can distribute it elsewhere.

You could always throw away the excess, but I know that seems wasteful. So try to give away the excess candy the day after.

Tip #5: Don't eat any candy at all!

I know this is a hard tip to follow. But, I want you to know that candy can be very addictive. Once you have 1 piece, you may feel like you need to keep eating until you're sick (I've been there.)

Do your best to resist temptation. We're all human, but if you can avoid eating a ton of sugar during the days leading up to and following Halloween, you can avoid gaining excess fat.

There are several different cell types are that critical to tumour growth. In particular Endothelial Progenitor Cells are a very important cell population in tumour blood vessel growth. This finding was demostrated in the high impact factor journals of Science (2008) and Genes and Development (2007)which also showed that Endothelial Progenitor Cells are critical for metastasis and the angiogenesis [1] [2]. This importance of endothelial progenitor cells in tumour growth and angiogenesis has been confirmed by a recent publication in Cancer Research (August 2010). This seminal paper has demonstrated that endothelial progenitor cells can be marked using the Inhibitor of DNA Binding 1 (ID1). This novel finding meant that investigators were able to track endothelial progenitor cells from the bone marrow to the blood to the tumour-stroma and even incorporated in tumour vasculature. This finding of endothelial progenitor cells incorporated in tumour vasculature proves the importance of this cell type in blood vessel development in a tumour setting. Furthermore, ablation of the endothelial progenitor cells in the bone marrow lead to a significant decrease in tumour growth and vasculature development. Therefore endothelial progenitor cells are very important in tumour biology and present novel therapeutic targets
